Ann Demeulemeester was born in Kortrijk in 1959 to Albert and Monique Verhelst-Pappijn. She later resided in the city of Bruges. In the beginning, Demeulemeester had little passion for fashion. She went to art classes for three years. It was there that she began to notice her interest in portraiture and people. This caused her to think about the design of clothing. After that, Ann went on to study fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1978 until 1981. The year 1986 was the first time Demeulemeester together with fellow classmates at her school, the Antwerp Royal Academy, went to London to exhibit their collections. Due to this, she’s often described as a part of the “Antwerp Six,” the unique and innovative Belgian designers from the 1980s. This group of avant-garde fashion designers are famous for their deconstructivist style of creating unconventional clothing lines. The other notable members of this group are Dries van Noten and Walter van Beirendonck.
It was in 1985 that Demeulemeester came out with her own collection Ann Demeulemeester together with her the help of husband Patrick Robyn. The first collection debuted in an Parisian art gallery that featured an in-built runway and solemn fashion models back in 1992. She introduced her own menswear collection.
In November 2013, Demeulemeester announced she was leaving her eponymous fashion house. The exit letter also explained that the brand will show its autumn/winter 2014 men’s and women’s collection together at February’s Paris Fashion Week. After Ann’s departure in 2013, French designer Sébastien Meunier was named the artistic director of the maison; he had previously designed for the men’s collections since 2010.
In June 2013, 32 BVBA fashion house split the Ann Demeulemeester and Ackermann labels into two independent companies. The Ann Demeulemeester label is reported to have $50 million in revenues. The Demeulemeester label “operates freestanding stores in Antwerp, Hong Kong and Tokyo, and wholesales to an array of international retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue and Barneys New York in America, L’Eclaireur and Le Bon Marché in Paris and Lane Crawford and Joyce in Hong Kong.”
Demeulemeester got married to photographer Patrick Robyn in 1985, and they had a son Victor. The couple lives in Antwerp which is the only residence in Belgium that was designed by the architect Le Corbusier.
