Van Opstal was defeated by a Japanese foe at Shootboxing 2013 Act 1 on February 22, 2013. He lost a close decision to Yoshihiro Sato. Van Opstal was part of an eight-man tournament to crown the WMTA World Super Welterweight Champion (-69.85kg/154 lb), at Haarlem Fight Night IV, Haarlem, Netherlands. He won the semi-finals and quarter-finals by decision, beating Maiki Karathanasis and Kevin Hessling, respectively. He then faced Armen Petrosyan, who fought in a five-rounder in the final. Petrosyan did some damage to van Opstal’s legs with low kicks throughout the fight. His corner then threw in his towel at the end the third round. He returned to K-1 to face Enriko Kehl in a K-1 World MAX 2013 World Championship Tournament Final 16 held in Majorca, Spain on September 24, 2013. The result was a unanimous one.

The unanimous decision of It’s Showtime 2012, Leeuwarden, Leeuwarden, Netherlands, January 28, 2012, saw van Opstal lose to Hafid Roshani. Van Opstal defeated Vahid Roshani at RISE 88 Tokyo on June 2, 2012. The fight was even after the first two rounds. He faced Yuichiro Nagashima (Jienotsu) at REBELS.13 Tokyo on October 28, 2012. With a spot in Shoot Boxing World Tournament 2012 up for grabs, van Opstal won his place in the second consecutive S-Cup when he defeated Nagashima unanimously. On November 17, 2012, the 2012 S-Cup took place. Van Opstal defeated Thai Bovy Sor Udomson in a unanimous decision to reach the quarter-finals. The semi-finals were set for Hiroaki Suzuki, but Suzuki was unable to continue due to injury. Van Opstal took on Satoru Suzuki, a reserve fighter. Van Opstal defeated Suzuki twice in less than a minute in round 1. The referee called the fight off and set up a match against his mentor and stable mate Andy Souwer in final. Van Opstal was defeated by Souwer in a unanimous decision.

On March 21st, 2010, he made his K-1 debut in Utrecht. He faced Robin van Roosmalen during the quarter-finals. After the three-round regulation, the bout was deemed a draw. However, he made a quick return to Japan and won a string of victories over top middleweights. He was given the nickname “The Japanese Killer”. He followed that up with a win by low kicks in round two. Finally, he won the year with a unanimous victory over Akihiro Gono at Shooto the Shoot 2011 November 6, 2011.
After these courses he was ready to go for it, he carefully started a number of private lessons and after a while he was able to set up his own bootcamp group. After this fast-growing success, it was time for something new. Since 2015 his own gym ‘HVO-personal training’ was opened. This will mainly be about personal training, including private kickboxing / boxing lessons. But small group training courses and group lessons are part of the program as well. In addition, he also started “GET FIT WITH HVO group lessons” in 2015.
