Akershus was CEO Svein Kristian Amyhr (1946-19) and Rita Kielland (1948-19). Asmyhr was raised in Frogner and Sorum on the family farm. From 1983 to 1986, he attended Melvold junior high and Lillestrom senior high schools from 1986 to 1990. In 1987-88, he was a Grayson County High School foreign exchange student in Kentucky. From 1990 to 1991, he completed his military service in the Hans Majestet Konens Garde.

Asmhyr, a lifelong advocate of Norway’s membership in the European Union and European integration was elected to the central committee of the Norwegian branch in 2011 of the European Movement International. Asmhyr led a group that opposed the EU Data Retention Directive by the Progress Party. The measure was approved after much discussion, thanks to the support of both the Labour Party and the Conservative Party.

Outspoken on issues relating to law enforcement and the judiciary, Asmyhr often acts as party spokesperson on these matters. In response to the annual increase in numbers of aggravated sexual assaults in the capital Oslo in 2011, Asmyhr called for the establishment of women-only taxi companies.

Asmhyr was elected in 1995 to the Sorum municipal council. He served there until 2005. He was first elected to Akershus County Council in 1995. He served until 2003. In 2005, he was elected as the first Norwegian parliament representative for Akershus, the Storting. He was reelected in 2009. He was the pro-tempore vice-speaker of Storting in the fall of 2010. Asmyhr declared that he would not run for reelection in the lead-up to the 2013 parliamentary election.
