Murray ended his career with 354 assists and 230 goals during 915 total NHL games. From 1991 to 1992, Murray was traded to the Winnipeg Jets along with teammate Warren Rychel for Bryan Marchment and Chris Norton. Murray was named captain of the team and scored 47 points over the 79 games of that season. His time in Winnipeg was brief as Murray was acquired by the Blackhawks in 1992-93. In the following year, he again traded for another team, this time Ottawa Senators. Ottawa Senators. Murray was the only player on the team with a plus score. Murray is traded between 1994 and 1995 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Murray was part of 13 games for the Penguins before being traded during 1995-1996, for the Colorado Avalanche. Murray along with the Avalanche reached into the Stanley Cup Finals where they defeated the Florida Panthers in four games. Murray took home his first and sole Stanley Cup with the Avalanche. Murray continued to play hockey for a further year as a member of The Chicago Wolves of the International Hockey League before he retired in 1997.

Before the start of the 2006–07 season Foley was let go and the radio and television broadcasts were separated. At this time Murray was paired with former New York Islanders voice John Wiedeman. Since pairing with Wiedeman, the duo has gone on to call three Stanley Cup Championships.

Until January 23, 2011, Murray was the last Blackhawk player to successfully convert on a penalty shot at home against Kari Takko of the Minnesota North Stars back in 1987. Marian Hossa is now the latest Blackhawk player to do so.

Murray was picked from Murray’s University of North Dakota by the Chicago Black Hawks with the 557th overall pick in the 3rd selection round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Murray was drafted in the National Hockey League debut in the 1981-82 season’s playoffs April 4 1982 with the Minnesota North Stars where he scored his first NHL goal. It was the Black Hawks would be defeated in the Division Finals, which they lost to their rivals, the St. Louis Blues. His first NHL normal season score was in the game against Toronto Maple Leafs and he finished his debut campaign with just 16 points across 54 games. Murray’s career reached its peak in the 1985-86 season when he scored 99 points. Murray was recognized with the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the best defensive player in the league at the time.

Troy Norman Murray (born July 31st 1962) is a Canadian former professional hockey player who played for the NHL. Murray serves as the colour analyst for WGN-AM’s broadcasts of Chicago Blackhawks hockey games. Murray is a native of Calgary, Alberta, but was raised living in St. Albert, Alberta.

Murray was a part of his two-season stint (1978-1980) in the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Murray also played in two games for the Lethbridge Broncos of the Western Hockey League. Two seasons playing at the University of North Dakota, the team was named twice as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Second All-Star Team in 1981 and 1982. Murray led North Dakota in scoring as freshman and was instrumental in helping to win an NCAA Title in 1982. The year 1982 was the time that Murray got selected to be a part of Team Canada at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Murray was appointed captain of the team and was the captain of the team to the gold medal.

After retirement Murray joined the Blackhawks TV crew as the studio analyst, a position he held from the start of the 1998–99 season until November 13, 2003. Troy was then named TV color commentator teaming up with Pat Foley for two seasons in which their play by play was simulcast on the then radio flagship WSCR.
