Hannelore Kraft (nee Kulzhammer, born 12 June 1961) was a German politician. From 2010 to 2017, she was the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia. Kraft was the first woman to head the government of this state. She was also the third woman to head a German state government. She was also the President of Bundesrat between 1 November 2010 – 31 October 2011. This made her the first woman to hold this office. She was the former leader for the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia. She served as the President of the Bundesrat from 1 November 2010 to 31 October 2011.
Detlev Samland was replaced as Minister for Federal and European Affairs on April 24, 2001. She then served as Minister of Science and Research from 12 November 2002 to 31 May 2005 under Minister-President Peer Steingbruck.
After the SPD lost the 2005 state election in North Rhine-Westphalia, Kraft was elected leader of the SPD’s parliamentary group with 95.7% of the votes, hence becoming the Opposition Leader in the state. In 2007, she was elected chairperson of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia.
On 13 November 2009, Kraft was elected as one of the four vice chairs of the federal SPD under chairman Sigmar Gabriel, receiving the highest overall vote. A party congress in February 2010 affirmed that she was the SPD’s candidate for Minister-President at the May 2010 state election.
In 1994, Kraft joined the SPD. After becoming the head of a workers council and having to struggle to find a nursery for her son, Kraft was attracted to politics. She was elected to the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia at the 2000 North Rhine-Westphalia State Election. In 2005, she was elected to the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia. She represented electoral district 74 (Mulheim 2-Essen VII), but in 2005 she moved to electoral district 64.
