Nickels (born August 7 1955) was the 51st Mayor from Seattle, Washington. The mayor was elected in January of 2002, and was reelected for another term in 2005. Then, in August of 2009 Nickels was third place in the primaries election to become Seattle mayor, but failed to be able to run in the general election of November 2009 as well as losing his bid to run for the third run as the mayor. He resigned as mayor on January 1st in 2010.
Nickels has witnessed a variety of noteworthy occasions during his time as the mayor of Seattle. He was mayor in 2003 and assisted in the opening of the Sound Transit Link light rail project in November. He also issued an executive order in 2004, which granted the same rights to all in a marriage and who works with Seattle city government, regardless of sexual orientation.
A late 2008 poll of likely Seattle voters reflected dissatisfaction with the incumbent mayor, showing that 31% approved of Nickels’s performance as mayor while 57% disapproved. Nickels’ low popularity numbers did not recover by August 2009, when he was defeated in the primary election in his bid for a third term as Seattle’s mayor. In Nickels’ concession defeat, he thanked Seattle voters and noted, “Twice they gave me the honor of doing this. They want a new generation of leadership.”
In December 2008, Nickels was criticized after an unusual snowstorm blanketed the city with the greatest snowfalls it had seen since 1996. The Seattle “snowpack,” which began accumulating on December 13, did not melt until December 27, the longest period of time snow had remained on the ground in Seattle since the mid-1980s. Seattle did not use salt to clear its roads, citing environmental concerns, which led to severe problems with the city’s public transit system.
Nickels is an active part of the Washington State Democratic Party and was the president of the United States Conference of Mayors however, he resigned from that position when he resigned from the office of Seattle mayor. Nickels was a member of the director’s board for Sound Transit. Since 2003, he’s also served as chairman of the Transportation and Communications Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and was a member of the Council of Trustees.

In 1961, the family relocated to Seattle in the year he graduated at the age of 21 from Seattle Preparatory School and attended the University of Washington, but quit before completing his studies to pursue his interest in politics.
Nickels was a legislative assistant for Seattle City Council member and the future city council member Norm Rice, from 1979 until 1987. Nickels has been elected to King County Council in 1987 and defeated incumbent Bob Grieve, and reelected in the years 1991, 1995 and 1999. In 2001 Nickels was elected the Mayor of Seattle (defeating Seattle City Attorney Mark Sidran) and was elected in 2005. Nickels was a candidate for the second term for the third time during 2009 but was unable to make it to the general election following being third in the primary election that took place in August 2009.
In 2005, Nickels announced an “Environmental Action Agenda” with the goal of protecting air quality and public health. The primary goal of the agenda is to reduce Seattle’s greenhouse gas emissions “to meet or beat” the levels stipulated in the Kyoto protocols. Nickels spearheaded the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, an accord between over 600 US cities committed to reducing greenhouse emissions. Nickels won the 2006 Climate Protection Award from the Environmental Protection Agency, the 2006 Edgar Wayburn Award for Environmental leadership from the National Sierra Club, and the 2006 National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation.
