Graeme West is one of the most popular and richest Rugby League Player who was born on December 5, 1953 in New Zealand. Graeme Leonard West (born 5 December 1953) is a New Zealand former rugby league player and coach. With a height of six feet and five inches tall, he was as a forward, captaining English team Wigan. West also played in the representative rugby league with New Zealand and is the father of Super League player, Dwayne West.
After the demotion of John Dorahy, West was appointed coach of Wigan after Wigan supporters had petitioned him for the job. In the first month of his coaching and at the close of 1993-1994’s Rugby Football League season West won his first First Division Premiership Trophy against Castleford before traveling along with Wigan to Brisbane for the World Club Challenge. He coached them in the victory in the 1994 World Club Challenge victory over Australian premier team The Brisbane Broncos – The first time that it had been won in the hands of an English team from Australia. In the course of his first full season Wigan and his team took home the League Championship, Challenge Cup, Regal Trophy, and Premiership the “Grand Slam” of the four trophy categories. Although Wigan had the upper hand in Rugby League from 1985 to 1995 but it was the only year in which the club was able to achieve this feat. In 1994, during the Kangaroo trip, Wigan hosted a game in which they played an Australian national team, but they couldn’t achieve a victory. Despite a comeback attempt in the second half and a win for the tourists, they lost the game 30-20.
In 2008 West was named in the Taranaki Rugby League Team of the Century. He still lived and worked in Wigan up to the early 2010s, but then returned to his native New Zealand.
Graeme West played left-second-row, i.e. number 11 and scored a goal in Wigan’s defeat of 18-26 by St. Helens in the 1984 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1984-85 campaign at Central Park, Wigan, on the 28th of October, 1984 The left-prop was played, i.e. number 8, in Wigan’s 34-8 victory over Warrington in the 1985 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1985-86 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens, on Sunday 19 October 1986, and played as an interchange/substitute (replacing Prop Shaun Wane), and scored a try in the 28-16 victory Warrington in the 1991 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1987-88 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens, on Sunday 11 October 1987.

Graeme West played left-second-row, i.e. number 11, (replaced by interchange/substitute Brian Case) in Wigan’s 15-4 victory over Leeds in the 1982-83 John Player Trophy Final during the 1982-83 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Saturday 22 January 1983, played left-second-row in the 11-8 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1985-86 John Player Special Trophy Final during the 1985-86 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Saturday 11 January 1986, and played left-prop, i.e. number 8 in the 18-4 win against Warrington at the time of 1987-86 John Player Special Trophy Final in the 1986-87 period on the pitch at Burnden Park, Bolton on the 10th of January, 1987 on a Saturday.
West was chosen to be part of his New Zealand national team in the 1975 World Cup tournament. West was accepted to English team Wigan during 1983-83 Rugby Football League season from New Zealand side Taranaki. He was 29 when signing, even though Wigan believed he was two years older. Within a few weeks of getting his start, he was playing the left second row, i.e. number 11 in the victory of 15-4 against Leeds during the 1982-83 John Player Trophy Final during the 1982-83 season at Elland Road, Leeds on the 22nd of January, 1983 on a Saturday. He was named captain in 1984 and led Wigan towards Wembley to play in the 1985 Challenge Cup Final, which was defeated by Widnes. He was captain of Wigan winning 1985’s Challenge Cup Final. West was a non-playing substitute for champions Wigan during their victory in the 1987 World Club Challenge victory against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eels who were visiting. West retired from the initial team in 1989 and took over an ‘A’ Reserve team as coach, and also played an appearance in the final minutes of the game at Castleford in 1991 because of the injuries, as well as a fixture accumulation in the final minutes of the game. He scored a goal in the match that earned an applause standing in the stands.
West stayed on in that position until February 1997 when, following an early exit from the Challenge Cup in 2 consecutive years, he was replaced by Eric Hughes.
