Born on the 29th of May, 1970, in Tamil Nadu’s south Indian State of Tamil Nadu, G. Mugesh completed his master’s studies in chemistry at the University of Madras in 1990 and, after receiving an M.S. degree from Bharathidasan University in 1993 the doctoral candidate enrolled for his education in the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai under the direction by H. B. Singh to earn a PhD degree in 1998. After completing his studies at the institute the doctoral student completed his post-doctoral studies until 2000, and then relocated to continue his research in the labs of de:WolfWalther du Mont from Brunswick University of Technology and de:Helmut Sies from the University of Dusseldorf on an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship till 2001. After that, after securing an Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellowship, he relocated back to the US to collaborate alongside K. C. Nicolaou at the Scripps Research Institute. After returning in India in 2002 He joined IISc Indian Institute of Science as an assistant professor. He was promoted to an associate professor in 2006. and then a professor in the department of physical and inorganic chemical chemistry in 2012. In IISc He is the head of the Mugesh Laboratory that is attached to it.
Mugesh is famously known for his vast research in the chemistry of thyroid hormone metabolism. His research has contributed to expanding the knowledge of organic/inorganic synthesis and study of enzyme mimetic. He is recognized for his creation of therapeutic protocols for neurodegenerative and endothelial disorders as well as his research on the b-lactamase-based resistance to antibiotics. His work has been documented through several peer-reviewed publications; ResearchGate and Google Scholar two online repositories of scientific research, has listed 150 and 153 in total. He has conducted a number of clinical trials, including one on a substance that he developed to treat thyroid problems. He is also involved with science journals like Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, ACS Omega of the American Chemical Society, Bioorganic Chemistry of Elsevier as well as Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group as members of their editorial boards. He also serves as vice president of the Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES) that publishes three science journals, namely. Chemistry – An Asian Journal, Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, and ChemNanoMat.
The holder of one of the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship during his postdoctoral period, Swarnajayanthi Fellowship (2006-07), Ramanna Fellowship (2008-09) and the J. C. Bose National Fellowship (2015) of the Department of Science and Technology and the Invitation Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2016), Mugesh was appointed Fellow by the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India in 2010. He was also elected by members of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2013 and also by the Indian National Science Academy in the year 2016. Professor. R. A. Mashelkar Endowment Lecture at the National Chemical Laboratory (2014) and the Prof. S. K.
