The Birmingham Post has described him as Birmingham Post as “undoubtably the finest chef to hail from Chelmsley Wood” and he is the owner and Head Chef of Purnell’s Restaurant located in Birmingham, England, which was named the Michelin Star in the month of January of 2009.
In August 2010 , it was revealed that Purnell would open an additional restaurant called The Asquith which is which is an “ambitious, neighbourhood restaurant” situated in the building of the Jessica’s restaurant in Edgbaston. In April of 2011, The Asquith closed its doors in the wake of an issue with the building’s the landlord. In 2015 , the structure was converted into luxury apartments.
Purnell is a regular presenter and chef on BBC show Saturday Kitchen. He has also appeared as judge on Come Dine With Me – Champion of Champions, and featured on Secret Kitchen and Great British Menu. In 2017, he helmed 40 episodes of My Kitchen Rules for its third series.

Purnell’s experience in fine dining began in 1996, when he joined Andreas Antona at Simpsons restaurant which was then located at Kenilworth, Warwickshire – as chef de part. While at Simpsons was working on assignments with notable chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Gary Rhodes as well as at various restaurants that were located in Lyon, Montpellier and the Basque Country. In 2002, he spent six months as sous chef of the Claude Bosi’s Hibiscus restaurant in Ludlow, Shropshire.
In 2003, Purnell got his initial Chef job in Jessica’s located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, which was the first Michelin star to the Birmingham restaurant in 2005 and was awarded the English “Restaurant of the Year” by the AA in the same year.
Purnell has published several cookery books including Rib Ticklers and Choux- ins (2016) and Cracking Yolks & Pig Tales (2017). He has also published a children’s book, The Magical Adventures of Whoops the Wonder Dog (2018).
