Gareth John Griffiths (born 10 April 1970) is an English former footballer. As a defender, he played 337 games for the league during a 13-year stint within the English Football League.

He was signed by Rochdale on July 1, 2001. He scored four goals during his 48 games in 2001-02 He also was instrumental in helping “Dale” reach the Third Division play-off semi-finals where they were defeated in the semi-finals by Rushden & Diamonds. The manager Steve Parkin left Spotland in November 2001. The club trialed John Hollins, Paul Simpson and Alan Buckley in the role prior to when Parkin came back to the club in December. When he wasn’t there, Griffiths scored seven goals in 47 games between 2002 and 2003 and helped the club not finish at the bottom of the league table. He made 35 appearances during 2003-04, and Rochdale did not fall out of League One by two spots or five places. The defensive defender scored four goals over 43 games during 2004-05 and scored a hat-trick surprise during a match against Scarborough with a 4-1 victory during the Football League Trophy on 28 September. He played in 29 games in League Two in 2005-06, before declaring the end of his professional career in the month of May. He left the Football League and joined Steve Burr’s Northwich Victoria in July 2006 and played in 27,27 Conference National games before leaving at the close of the 2006-07 season.

He joined Wigan Athletic in June 1998. The club played him 26 times with Wigan Athletic’s “Latics” in 1998-99, however, he was not part of the play-off semi- final loss against Manchester City. The club moved stadiums over the summer, shifting to Springfield Park to the JJB Stadium and switching managers and replaced John Deehan with Ray Mathias. Griffiths was involved in 20 games during 1999-2000 and was not a substitute during the play-off Final loss to Gillingham. He played 22 times in 2000-01 under coach Bruce Rioch, but did not make an appearance under Steve Bruce.

The first time he played professionally was at Welsh club Rhyl and then making his move towards the English professional football in 1993 at Port Vale. After playing in excess of 100 games over five years with the club the player was made the move onto Wigan Athletic in 1998. In the following three years, the club moved him to Rochdale. An all-time first team player at the ‘Dale and made 182 league appearances during his five seasons at the club. He was a part of the team in 2006 and was a member of an non-league club, Northwich Victoria, where he was a player for one season before deciding to retire.

Griffiths began his career at Rhyl prior to being purchased from Rhyl by John Rudge, manager of Second Division club Port Vale during February of 1993. Griffiths made debut during a draw against Stockport County on 12 February 1994, but played no part in the promotion period, however he was regularly playing as a player in the First Division from August 1994. In November 1994, he suffered an injury to his groin, which forced the need for an operation to repair a double hernia in January 1995. By the end of the season, he had returned to his first place in the team. He was a regular player in the “Valiants” first team in 1995-96, he was a part of the 1996 Anglo-Italian Cup Final, as Vale fell 5-2 to Genoa. He played 31 times in 1996-97 as the club achieved its second most successful league finish. He was in loan with Shrewsbury Town, and made six Third Division appearances for Jake King’s “Shrews”, before returning to Vale Park. He appeared in three times for Vale in 1997-98. He was offered an opportunity to transfer for free in the summer.
