In March of 2015, he announced his decision to quit the position. He was succeeded as bishop by Rt. Rev. Jose Antonio McLoughlin.
He was ordained fiveth Bishop for the Diocese of Western North Carolina on September 18th in 2004. The 999th bishop who was consecrated within the Episcopal Church, he was consecrated by Robert Hodges Johnson, Michael Curry along with J. Neil Alexander at the Asheville Civic Center.
The year 1993 was the time he was awarded an M.Div. degree in 1993 from The University of the South, Sewanee and was designated as a deacon. He was ordained as a clergyman on April 13th, 1994 and was the Rector for St. Gregory the Great Church in Athens, Georgia.

Taylor earned his Master of Arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1972, then an advanced master of Arts in English from the University of South Carolina (1974) and the Ph.D. in Theology and Literature from Emory University (1983).
In 2016, Taylor was named the Visiting Professor of Episcopal Studies at Wake Forest University’s School of Divinity.
