LEVI STRAUSS filed civil case C 06 2402 vs. Frank Mechaly and his Jeanius Corporation due to their belief that 575 DENIM was infringing on their 500 series of jeans. The Mechaly’s claim was that he did not have any intention of taking on that responsibility and claimed that the brand was influenced by his birthday that was on May 9 1975 (5-75) and that he simply desired to stand out using a number instead of an alphabet or word like the majority of other brands.

The year the 575 DENIM was began, it was incredibly popular. It was well-loved by celebrities and was particularly noticed when the actress Cameron Diaz, who was not paid for endorsements, actually visited shops to ask for 575 DENIM and then wore the clothes on red carpet events as well as on their Saturday Night Live appearance. The brand was expected to continue to be successful until at the close of 2004,, they were brought into court from Levi Strauss & Co.

The case was extremely costly for Mechaly, financially and emotionally. He spent three years in litigation to the point that he lost 90% of his business due to being unable to run daily operations while fighting the lawsuit. He was no longer able to pay the 300 employees he had on payroll and in 2007 he ran out of resources and chose to give in to a settlement. Part of the settlement stated that over the course of a year the brand name must change from 575 to MAY75.

When he was 18 Frank began designing for himself and was employed by brands like Blanc Bleu, H.Landers, D.D.P., and Texola which was his personal brand. He also developed his own brand Culture Couture. The brand would then be the designer of the first collection of Seven7 jeans in 2003.

Frank was relocated back to U.S. also.

A female love interest at the time convinced him to stay in the U.S., which he did and then started the now famous brand 575 DENIM, which was started in July 2004 and incorporated in August 2004. Frank was helped by Maurice Marciano, the CEO of Guess, Inc, who hired him to produce private label apparel and admired his distinctive vintage, distressed and worn details in jeans.
