Brunicardi was a surgical intern within Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, California and was a surgical resident at SUNY Downstate Medical Center located in Brooklyn, New York from 1982 until 1983. From 1983 to 1986, he was an associate researcher at the Department of Surgery at SUNY Health Science Center and was awarded many international and national research awards. Between 1986 and 1988, the time he was a Senior Resident in the Surgery Department at SUNY in 1988, and from 1988 to 1989 He was Chief Resident for General Surgery at SUNY Health Science Center.
The 1st of July, 2011, Brunicardi rejoined the UCLA faculty as the Moss Foundation Professor of Gastrointestinal and Personalized Surgery and the Chief of General Surgery at the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Brunicardi is the current Senior Vice Dean and President of the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.
Brunicardi’s research interests are focused on the translational genomics of medicine and surgery. His specialties in surgery include gastrointestinal surgery as well as the surgical treatment of tumors in the neuroendocrine system. Brunicardi has had an ongoing research grant since 1992. He has a huge bibliography of more than 270 papers and edits a textbook on surgical surgery.
