She edited the first textbook on geriatric palliative care, as well as four editions of Geriatric Medicine. Her book, Meeting the Needs of Older Adults with Serious Illness, was published by Springer Publishing in 2014. Palliative Care: Transforming the Care of Serious Illness, was published in 2010.
In the year 2000, Meier has sat on the board of directors for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care. She has served or was a member on national committees, including that of National Palliative Care Research Center (Chair, Scientific Advisory Committee) as well as the U.S. Senate’s Health Care Services Task Force. She serves on the editorial board of journals such as Drugs & Aging, Interdisciplinary Topics in Gerontology, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management and Internal Medicine News.

Meier (born April 15th 1952) Meier, an American physician and palliative-care specialist, is the Director of the Center to Advance Palliative care (CAPC) which is a national organization that aims to increase the quality and quantity of palliative programs across the United States. Meier is also Vice-Chairperson for Public Policy and professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and Catherine Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics at the Icahn School for Medicine in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Meier was the founder and Director of the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City from 1997 until 2011.
in 1983 Meier began her career at her first year at Mount Sinai School of Medicine as an instructor in the Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development. She was appointed associate professor in the year 1990 and professor of medicine and geriatrics in the year 1990, and the professor of ethics in medicine in 1998. From 1995 to 2003, she was the head of the Division of Geriatrics in Mount Sinai’s Department of Medicine, and from 1995 until the present she has been the director of Mount Sinai’s Palliative Care Program. In 1999, she was named Director of the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute and the Center to Advance Palliative Care.
Meier is the recipient of the 2008 MacArthur Fellowship. She received the 2015 Academy Distinguished Award from the New York Academy of Medicine and was listed among New York Magazine’s Best Doctors of 2009.
