Ethan Stiefel (born 13 February 1973 in Tyrone, Pennsylvania) is an American choreographer, dancer and director. His principal role was as a dancer at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) from 1997 until July 2012. The artistic director was with the Royal New Zealand Ballet from 2011 until 2014. The wife of his is Gillian Murphy, also a principal dancer at ABT.
He developed an intensive four-week program, Stiefel & Students, for students who want to dance. students learn and perform alongside professionally trained ballet dancers. The workshop is held every year at Martha’s Vineyard in the month of August. It is open to students from 12-18 years old. Its roster of celebrity guest teachers includes Stiefel, Johan Kobborg, Amanda McKerrow, Elizabeth Parkinson, Scott Wise, Marcelo Gomes, John Gardner, Gary Chryst, Ann Reinking, and Alina Cojocaru. It has been suspended since the year 2008.
In 2007, Stiefel appeared in an episode of Queer Eye to meet a “straight guy” who considers Stiefel his “idol.” In 2010 he appeared as himself in season 4, episode 8 of Gossip Girl with Murphy.
In 2007 he appeared in the movie, Born to Be Wild – The Leading Men of American Ballet Theatre with Angel Corella, Jose Manuel Carreno and Vladimir Malakhov directed by Judy Kinberg and produced by Jodee Nimerichter.
The year 2000 was the time he was a part-time actor in the movie Center Stage, directed by Nicholas Hytner with original choreography by Susan Stroman and featuring Amanda Schull. He was also in sequels Center Stage: Turn It Up and Center Stage: On Pointe. Center Stage features a subplot where Stiefel’s character is able to win the financial backing of a feisty female patron (played by Elizabeth Hubbard). He took home a silver award during the Prix de Lausanne in 1989 and was also awarded an award from the Princess Grace Foundation of America in 1991. In 1995, he had become an important dancer for the company. The time he was with NYCB came to an end. NYCB in April of 1997 when the company was accepted into ABT as the principal dancer from until 2012, when he resigned. He was a dancer in the Mikhail Baryshnikov school, which was a short- that was part of Classical Ballet at ABT. His repertoire of dance includes numerous romantic roles that are important to both contemporary and classical ballet.
In late 2005, Ballet Pacifica, based in Irvine, California, named him as its artistic director with the aim to relaunch itself as a higher-profile ballet company. However, after the company failed to raise the funds necessary to support their new vision, its executive director resigned followed by Stiefel himself in April 2006.
