Emma Carney is one of the most popular and richest Triathlete who was born on July 29, 1971 in Wooburn and Bourne End, England, United Kingdom. Emma Elizabeth Carney (born 29 July 1971) is an Australian professional triathlete who was a two-time World Triathlon Champion. Carney is among the few triathletes around the world who has won two ITU World Championships. She was the top triathlete based on ITU classifications in 1995 1997, 1996, and has won 19 World Cup wins, faster than any triathlete. In 1996 she won seven times, and is the record holder for the most amount of ITU World Series wins in one season.
Following her victory in the Ishigaki World Cup race in April 1998, Carney never again won the World Cup or World Championship race. In July, she could only finish 15th for the World Cup race at Gamagori and then was unable to finish in the Lausanne World Championships in August and was able to be fourth in November’s Auckland World Cup race. After sustaining a metatarsal injury in 1999, which stopped her being able to run for 8 weeks, she placed 3rd at the Montreal World Championships. As of 2000, she was not able to make it onto her place on the Australian Olympic women’s triathlon team despite a request at the CAS.
In 2006, Carney’s elder sister Jane died of cancer. She had thought that her heart problems were “really hard”, but describes her sister’s death as “a well of anguish that surpasses anything I’d ever seen or felt in life.”
After her ICD implant, doctors told her that she could not exercise at all, but Carney found that not exercising made her heart worse and that instead it was better to exercise a little every day to keep it under control. She now finds that she can do “quite a lot” of training, provided she avoids damaging high-intensity spurts. For example, she completed an iroman-length (180 km) bike ride, and hopes eventually to complete a full Ironman. Occasionally she exercises too hard, causing her ICD to “shock” her heart, as happened once when she was out running with her father. It also happened in 2008 when she was taking part in the 299 km Melbourne-to-Warrnambool bike race, when she forgot about her condition and attempted to chase down the leading pack.
Her co-recipient 1997 World Champion, Chris McCormack stated, “Emma is hard! ” In reference to her astonishingly long and intense training with a frenzied level, and her brutal aggression in her competition.

It was in the early spring of 1993 that Carney attempted her first triathlon. She took the title after she fought back a seven-minute deficit in a 700-meter swim. Her father, a chartered accountant, David, told her, “It’s 18 months until the world championship in Wellington. If you learn to swim and train, you’ll be the best triathlete in the world.” She remembered, “My father went over everything I had to do point by point and it all made sense.”
Then, in November of 1994 Carney fulfilled the prediction of her father, taking home her first ITU World title — her first triathlon at an international levelwith a record-breaking time of 2 minutes 12 seconds. From June 1995 until April 1997 Carney achieved an inexplicably long streak of 12 consecutive ITU World Cup wins. After a close loss to Michellie Jones in 1997’s Monaco World Cup, she also won four straight World Cup victories, before she won an additional ITU World Champion title in November. Infections caused by viruses meant she was unable to take home both the 1995 and 1996 World Championships, but still placed second in the 1996 World Championships.
Carney was forced to retire from professional triathlon in 2004 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Canada. She was later diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia, a life-threatening condition that causes the heart to beat too fast and out of control, usually during high-intensity anaerobic exercise. The doctors found it difficult to diagnose her condition, partly because Carney’s resting heart rate when asleep was only 21 bpm. In October 2004 surgeons implanted an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in the right ventricle of her heart.
