In 2017, a Wired article stated that she was “the type of middle schooler who refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, because she thought the idea of making children swear a loyalty oath was bizarre.” She was the winner of at the time of the 2007 DuPage County Spelling Bee. The victory led her to taking part at the Scripps National Spelling Bee the same year. She was able to stay until the quarterfinals. She was ranked 46th. After the event in June 2008, she was recognized by the governor at the time, the lieutenant governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, as well as the other regional champions of the spelling bee. Temple-Wood has received national press coverage for the creation of Wikipedia articles on women scientists and also for her efforts to boost their inclusion on Wikipedia. Temple-Wood also organizes edit-a-thons in libraries and museums to increase the number of women scientists represented on Wikipedia. In October of 2015 she informed The Atlantic that she had identified over 4,400 female scientists that did not have Wikipedia articles about them, despite the fact that each one was noteworthy enough to warrant being covered by one. In March of 2016 she received media attention across the world due to her approach to online sexual harassment she received: for every emails she receives, she planned to write the Wikipedia article about a female scientist. In March, she informed BuzzFeed News that with respect to doing this, “My motivation is to channel the frustration I feel from being harassed into something productive.” In May she was quoted by in the Fader the following “As a Wikipedian, my natural response to seeing a gap in coverage is to start a project, so that’s what I did with the Women Scientists project. The narrative of history has been dominated by men, and making sure that women’s biographies are included in Wikipedia can be our way of writing women back into that narrative.”
