Ellen Gezina Maria van Langen (born on February 9, the 9th of February, 1966) was a Dutch mid distance racer from the past who is a specialist in the 800 meters. An accomplished, but injured athlete She won the title of in 1992 the Olympic Champion for the women’s 800 meters. She is the current Director of the FBK events (the Hengelo meeting).

The year 1992 was her most successful year, winning all of the 11 events in the 800m. Following her Olympic success however, she suffered from numerous injuries. Her best result following 1992 was a sixth-place result in the 1995 World Championships at Gothenburg. Her ongoing injuries prevented her from winning the Olympic victory in the year 1996. She resigned from the sport in 1998.

After winning the gold medal in 1992, the Amsterdam unemployment benefit office ended her benefits on the grounds that she could earn a profit through her success in the near future. She holds a degree in Economics at The University of Amsterdam, and is currently working as an event coordinator for Global Sports Communication.

Van Langen was born in Oldenzaal, Overijssel. Before starting to run, she played football. It was only when she began to run seriously when she was around 20. The year 1989 was the time she took home her fourth of national titles in the 800 meter and later won the silver medal, which she shared with Ana Quirot (Cuba) at the World Student Games (Universiade) in 1:59.82. The following year, she was fourth in the finals at the European Championships in Split, with the Dutch National Record of 1:57.57 which was a bit slower than East German athletes Sigrun Wodars (gold), Christine Wachtel (silver) and Liliya Nurutdinova (bronze) from the Soviet Union.

In in 1991 she became afflicted due to the Achilles tendon strain. In the Tokyo World Championships she was eliminated in the heats. In the following year, which was leading to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona she beat Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Liliya Nurutdinova at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in Hengelo on June 28 in 1:56.66 The most efficient time in the year before the Games. In the two weeks leading up to the Olympics she ran a second speedy timing that was 1:56.92 on the track at Hechtel.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Van Langen won the Olympic title in the 800 metres in a time of 1:55.54, a time which is still the Dutch national record. Fearing her final sprint, her competitors including favorites Nurutdinova, Quirot, Ella Kovacs (Romania) and Maria Mutola (Mozambique) set a rapid pace, running the first lap in a very fast time of 55.73, with Van Langen only in 6th position. Entering the final stretch Nurutdinova, who had led the final from the start, had a slight lead but Van Langen moved through on the inside in the last 50m to win a surprise victory, beating Nurutdinova (silver) and Quirot (bronze).
