Pamela Jelimo is one of the most popular and richest Middle-Distance Runner who was born on December 5, 1989 in Nandi, Kenya. Pamela Jelimo (born 5 December 1989) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner. She is a specialist in the 800m. She was awarded the gold medal at this race during the 2008 Olympics at Beijing aged 18. It is her first Kenyan woman to be awarded the Olympic gold medal, and one of the very first Kenyan to be awarded the Golden League Jackpot. Jelimo holds the world junior 800m record as well as an older African record for similar distances. Jelimo is also among the youngest female athletes to win the Olympic silver medal in Kenya.

She crowned her unbeaten season by winning her race at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final. After the event she returned to Kenya for the first time since the Olympic trials and was welcomed by major festivities. On 18 September 2008 in Kapsabet Town, a street – Pamela Jelimo Street – was named in her honour.
She continued her unbeaten streak by winning the Weltklasse Golden League meeting in Zurich on 29 August 2008 improving her personal best to 1:54.01. This is the third fastest performance ever, behind Nadezhda Olizarenko and the world record of Jarmila Kratochvílová. At the Memorial van Damme competition in Brussels, the ÅF Golden League final, Jelimo won the 800 metres with a time of 1:55.16. As the only athlete to win the same event at all six Golden League meetings, she won the competition’s jackpot of $1,000,000. The only other remaining, Blanca Vlasic, failed to win the last event. She is the first Kenyan to win Golden League jackpot.
In June 2007, she was 5th in the 400m course in the Kenyan Championships with a time of 55.82 seconds. She continued to improve throughout the season, securing the gold medal for the 400 metres in the African Junior Championships with a time of 54.93 s . She also set the Kenyan senior record at the 200m race with 24.68 seconds. Jelimo was pleased with her performance, however her coach Zaid Kipkemboi Aziz suggested that she switch to 800 meters in order to excel over the more long distance. Jelimo began her work with the Kenyan police agency and was training with other Kenyan runners Janeth Jepkosgei.

Pamela Jelimo was born in Kiptamok village, Nandi District, Rift Valley Province. She was the daughter of Esther Cheptoo Keter, was a promising 200 meters and 400 metre runner, however, the traditions that were followed by her Nandi clan meant since she was the last daughter born to her, she was not able to get married and she had to take help her parents through their later years. But, she was able to have children with different men, and so Jelimo got her first education from her mom in a household comprised of three brothers and six sisters. Jelimo began her running career at the age of 13 in 2003 in Koyo Secondary in the Kaptumo division, close to Kapsabet. Jelimo quickly made herself an elite athlete, winning the school championships in 100 meters 200m, 200m 800 metres, 400 m 400 metres hurdles and the heptathlon. The high school games coach Philip Ng’eno noted that she would compete with males in sprint events because the girls were not able to give her the challenge she required.
Jelimo was married Peter Kiprotich Murrey, who is also an 800m running runner in the latter part of 2007. The couple could not afford a big wedding and instead, they had a small civil ceremony. The wedding was not announced to the public until December 2008.

She missed the 2009 indoor season due to achilles strain developed while training. Instead, she started her season in April at the Athletics Kenya meeting in Kakamega, running 200 and 1500 metres races for training purposes. On 23 May she ran her first 800 metres race of the year at the Meeting International Mohammed VI in Rabat, Morocco, finishing sixth (time 2:02.46) – it was the first 800 m race that she did not win. Two weeks later she finished last at the Prefontaine Classic meeting in Eugene, Oregon. Due to these dismal results, she concentrated on training for over a month. She successfully returned to track by winning the Heusden-Zolder meeting on 18 July running under two minutes (1:59.59).
