Dermot Mac Curtain is one of the most popular and richest Hurler who was born on April 6, 1957 in Blackrock, Ireland. Dermot Mac Curtain (born 1957) is an Irish former athlete. He played hurling for his club in Blackrock as well as being a part of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1977 to 1987.

In 1977, Mac Curtain made his debut as a member of his first team, the Cork Senior hurling club. The following year, he made his debut as a substitute in winning his very first Senior Munster title. Later, this was converted into the first All-Ireland medal following his win against Wexford at the end of the competition. In 1978, Mac Curtain repeated these victories along with Cork by winning the second Munster in addition to his All-Ireland titles. 1979 witnessed Mac Curtain win a third Munster medal, but Cork was defeated by Galway during Galway’s All-Ireland semi-final. In the years 1980 and 1981, Cork have given up the Munster titles, but Mac Curtain won back-to-back National Hurling League medals along with his home county. In 1982, Cork returned, as Mac Curtain won his fourth provincial trophy. But, the team defeat by Kilkenny at the All-Ireland final. 1983 was the year that saw Mac Curtain win a fifth Munster medal, but Kilkenny beat Cork at the same time during the All-Ireland final.

The next few seasons saw Blackrock go into decline. The club lost the 1982 county final to St. Finbarr’s, however, three years later in 1985 Mac Curtain’s side triumphed once again. A 1-14 to 1-8 victory gave him a fourth and final county title.

In 1984, the centenary year of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Mac Curtain won a sixth Munster Championship medal following a thrilling game against Tipperary. He later added a third All-Ireland medal to his collection following a defeat of Offaly in a special All-Ireland final in Semple Stadium. In 1985 another Munster title came Mac Curtain’s way, however, Galway were victorious over Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final. In 1986 a fifth consecutive provincial medal brought Mac Curtain’s overall tally up to eight. He missed the All-Ireland final win over Galway to injury. He returned in 1987 but Tipperary defeated Cork in the Munster final. Mac Curtain later retired from inter-county hurling.

Although Glen Rovers gained revenge in the final of the county championship of the year 1976 Blackrock came back to win in the year 1978. Again, it was the Glen” that stood in the Rockies in the way. However, Mac Curtain added a second county championship medal to his collection after the huge 4-12-1-7 victory. Again, ‘the Rockies won the provincial championships and beat Newmarket-onFergus in the final by two goals, securing Mac Curtain a second Munster club medal. The next All-Ireland final was a match between Kilkenny and Cork play Kilkenny again. It was Blackrock against Ballyhale Shamrocks. Ray Cummins scored two goals quickly in the first 30 minutes to put his team in the lead. When the final whistle blew, Blackrock were the winners , 5-5 to 5-7. Mac Curtain’s first All-Ireland club winner’s medal.

In 1974 Mac Curtain was a key player on his Cork minor team in hurling. In that year, he was awarded an Munster medal at this level. He then won another in a row in 1975. The same year, he was awarded the All-Ireland medal at the junior level. In the year 1976, Mac Curtain had graduated onto the Cork under-21 team. The following year, he took home the Munster title at this level. He then won another All-Ireland trophy to add to his list of achievements. He was awarded the second Munster under-21 crown in 1977.

Mac Curtain was barely out of the junior ranks when he was drafted into the Blackrock senior side in the year 1975. The following year, he took part for his county’s first final when the ‘the Rockies were playing Glen Rovers. Blackrock was awarded a county’s senior championship winner’s medal at the time after a stunning victory of 4-11 to 0-10. Blackrock was later a part of Cork at his participation in Munster set of matches and advanced to the final. It was Waterford’s Mount Sion provided the opposition however, Blackrock won by a massive 8-12 win over 3-8. Mac Curtain’s first provincial club winner’s medal. The following All-Ireland final was a match between Blackrock with James Stephens. After half-time, five points were down but the Kilkenny club came back and beat Mac Curatin’s team by 2-10 to 4-4.

In 1979 Blackrock made it two county titles in-a-row after an eight-point defeat of St. Finbarr’s. In a similar sequence of events to previous years the club later defeated Dunhill of Waterford to take the Munster club title. It was Mac Curtain’s third provincial club medal. Blackrock’s All-Ireland trail came to an end at the semi-final stage.
