Armstrong was the director of coaching for the now defunct Central Hockey League’s Denver Cutthroats. He is most famous for his stint with the National Hockey League, where Armstrong participated in the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and the St. Louis Blues.
The 11th of April, 2012 Armstrong was named the head manager for the Denver Cutthroats of the Central Hockey League. Although he has an NHL experience, he is most well-known in Denver for his role in the Denver Grizzlies’ 1994-95 Turner Cup title in their sole season Denver (though they moved from Salt Lake City and become the Utah Grizzlies, the team’s success is widely acknowledged as the reason behind attracted those from Quebec Nordiques to Denver that in the following offseason, and they would eventually become part of the Colorado Avalanche). After two seasons playing for Denver’s Denver Cutthroats as head coach, Armstrong was then appointed as the team’s president.
Armstrong was signed by his team the St. Louis Blues on September 8, 2009 in which he played his final professional season playing in the same team as his old LA King coach, Andy Murray.

Derek Armstrong spent the majority of his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings. After being selected in the New York Islanders in the 6th round 128th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Armstrong finally got his first NHL season in 2002-03 after spending eight years in minor leagues. A majority of his non-NHL time were with one of the two “AAA” North American development leagues: American Hockey League and International Hockey League.
Because of the NHL lockout, which certain NHL players were affected, Armstrong went to Europe to play within the Swiss National League A, for SC Rapperswil Jona, accumulating 17 points in just 12 games. The most impressive season statistically was 2006-07, where he scored 44 points and was seventh in Kings scoring that year.
