Bonner is a player for his home club Na Rossa. He is regarded as their “most famous son”. He made his first senior appearance for the club when he was 14 in 1979. He played in his 40th season in 2019 as an emergency goalie.
Bonner was appointed player-manager by Na Rossa at the age of 23. It was his first managerial position. He took the job after a trip into America in the United States in 1988 and when he returned after a long time, Donegal manager Tom Conaghan did not have him included in the county panel for the next year. Bonner was the captain of Na Rossa to the 1989 Donegal Intermediate Football Championship, and also played for Na Rossa’s team. Bonner’s siblings Sean, Michael and Donal were also part the Na Rossa team, while his brother Aidan who was minor who was an alternate. Brian McEniff took over as Donegal manager once more towards the end of 1989. McEniff brought back Bonner back to his county side. Bonner was unable to have the chance to play Na Rossa again for some time.
Bonner managed Gaoth Dobhair to the 2006 Donegal Senior Football Championship title. He also coached Carl McHugh at Na Rossa. He has also managed An Clochán Liath. He managed his club Na Rossa to the 2008 IFC final but they lost to Séan MacCumhaills by three points (he was not playing for them at the time).
