Deborah “Debbie” Bampton, MBE, (born 7 October 1961) is an English former international footballer who was midfielder. Her career was quite successful. Bampton scored a triple at Arsenal and also two doubles at Croydon. She was also capped at a rate of 95 times in England and scored three goals in total.
Her first team was Arsenal Ladies in 1992. Bampton then took home with Arsenal the three-peat in the form of League Cup, Premier League and FA Cup in that being her first season with the club. The following season, 1993-94, was lacking in comparison to the previous season. In this regard, in 1994, Bampton quit Highbury to become the manager for Croydon Women. From 1995 to 1996 Croydon was awarded the League title as well as also the FA Women’s Cup. Although they were forced to leave the field after just eight minutes due to injuries, Bampton won her fifth FA Cup winners’ medal when Croydon defeated Liverpool in the final of 1996 in The New Den. She was crowned league champion with Croydon two times before moving to Doncaster Belles as a player in 2000 following the Croydon club relocated to Charlton.
In 2004, she joined Eastbourne Borough Ladies FC, a team her father Albert was coaching. During their first season as a women team they went on to win the Sussex County Cup and the League Cup,
She joined the coaching staff of Whitehawk Ladies in the 2006 close season, along with former Arsenal and England player Angela Banks. In February 2008, she was manager of Whitehawk Ladies. Bampton joined the coaching staff of Lewes FC Ladies in January 2009.
Bampton began her professional career in the year 14 years old. She was a player at Howbury Grange managed by her father Albert. She was a part of the team that won the Women’s FA Cup in 1984. In 1987, she emigrated to Italy and played with Despar Trani 80 as a full-time professional with fellow countryman Kerry Davis. She only played one season in Italy however she was awarded runners-up awards at both Serie A and national Cup.

Bampton was the first player to make her England debut when she was in school, and played against the Netherlands in September 1978.
Bampton scored an important goal from Denmark in the final match of the tournament. England was selected for 1984’s European Competition for Women’s Football final. In the second game of the final on Kenilworth Road, Bampton scored in England’s penalty shootout loss to Sweden. In 1985, she was named the England captain after the departure of Carol Thomas, then England’s most popular player and the captain with the longest tenure. In 1991 she suffered an injury and was replaced in the captain’s role by Gillian Coultard. In 1995, new director Ted Copeland restored her as captain and she led the Three Lionesses into their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in 1995. Bampton recalls: “It was difficult, especially as Gill and I were roommates and at that point the England squad was split. A lot of people wanted Clare Taylor to be captain, but it was something I’d always wanted to do and so I just enjoyed it.” Bampton was captain during England’s disastrous 1997 UEFA Women’s Championship qualification campaign. In May 1997, Bampton made her last England performance in the 6-0 defeat against the United States in Portland. She was awarded the country’s 95th cap for England with three goals all in all.
Bampton was appointed an MBE in 1998 as a recognition of her services to women’s football. She also went on to be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
