Daniel Joseph Schafer (born October 5 1952) is a famous American country, pop and Christian musician, singer as well as songwriter and actor. He worked as a recording artist at RCA Records and moved from playing guitar in studios to writing songs and performing with country music superstars from across the country.

Schafer later left the stage and continued to perform over the course of six seasons in his own Grand Ole Opry, playing bass for Jack Greene. He was a regular at the Opryland theme park, and was included in the Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Classics Show. He appeared uncredited for the role of an actor in November’s CBS film, “Country Gold,” that included Loni Anderson as well as Earl Holliman, and Linda Hamilton.

As a music industry professional, he was asked to serve as a Judge for Music City Star Quest and in 2003 was inducted into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame.

Relocating to Nashville in 1979, Schafer found professional success in the country music genre. Because of his versatility in playing lead guitar, pedal steel guitar, and bass guitar, Schafer was chosen, with the recommendation of Bobby Randall of Sawyer Brown, to tour with Leroy Van Dyke as pedal steel guitarist, which was a catapult that led to his opportunities in touring with several major recording artists including Barbara Mandrell, Lorrie Morgan, Keith Whitley, George Jones, T. Graham Brown, and Shania Twain. He was featured in Barbara Mandrell’s “Do-Rite Band” on her “Moments” tour and appeared on the CBS Mandrell Family Christmas Special. Working with Shania Twain, Schafer was featured in multiple TV appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman on 10/2/95 and 2/26/96.

It was in 1978 that RCA Records released “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You,” the Schafer remake of the Foundations smash single together in conjunction with the Producers Bruce Goldberg and Don Davis for the RCA Victor distributed ‘Tortoise International Label.

Schafer is a native of Mount Pleasant, Michigan and began his career as a youngster in local radio programs as well as performing at jamborees. He started playing guitar at the age of nine. He and his parents, played in the dance club of the area, like the Palmer’s Idle Hour Bar in Weidman, Michigan. When he was in high school the guitarist was part of two rock-and-roll groups: The Bark of Paper Mulberry and The Wild West Show. After graduation, he attended Beal City High School in 1970 and moved to Detroit to join the group of musicians known as known as the Grand Band, which was earlier referred to as the “Popcorn Blizzard’. Schafer took over Marvin Lee Aday (professionally known as “Meat Loaf’) as the lead singer in the band. The band continued in Detroit his guitar playing attracted the attention of local recording talent like Moonstone as well as Skip Van Winkle who’d racked up record-breaking performances on Billboard charts.

It was 1974 when Schafer had signed an agreement for two years for two years with RCA Records and worked with producer Jack Richardson (The Guess Who, Alice Cooper, and Poco). The year 1976 saw Schafer released his solo song, ” A Day Without You Dear,” which was released but didn’t chart despite significant international radio play. The song was then recorded by The Skyliners on their 1978 reunion album, which was released that was released on their RCA Tortoise International album, later released in 2010 on their double-CD “Once Upon a Time” /”Skyliners”

Schafer continued songwriting and thru the 2000s acted as staff writer and Creative Director for Faverett Music Group publishing company which boasted songs written by Chris Gantry, Josh Osborne, Randy Thomas, Becky Hobbs, Jimmy Olander and many others. Schafer produced projects for Lifeway Worship and other artists in Nashville during this period.
