David Seidner is one of the most popular and richest American photographer who was born on February 18, 1957 in Los Angeles, California, United States. David Seidner (18 February 1957 6 June 1999) was an American photographer who was famous for his portraits and fashion photography.

In 1998, David Seidner made a series of photographs to commemorate his father’s John Singer Sargent retrospective at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Seidner captured 18 relatives of British and American Aristocrats, whose exquisite portraits Sargent painted at in the early part of century. The result was a beautiful portrait which pay tribute to Sargent but without imitating his style. “What I’m most interested in is evoking the spirit of a painting through the fold of fabric, the position of a hand, the quality of light on skin” The photographer said. The photograph of Helena Bonham Carter was selected to be part of the millennial exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery, London among the 100 most iconic photos of the 20th century. It was also awarded the LIFE Magazine Alfred Eisenstaedt Photograph of the Year Award (1999).

One of the most significant aspects of the work of David Seidner was his Nudes series that were later printed in book form as Nudes that were included in an exhibit at The New York’s Robert Miller Gallery in 1995. The work was completed in a brief period of just 2 years. Seidner’s Faces of Contemporary Art series includes 57 portraits over 19 years. Each photograph was taken within the exact same setting. Portrait to portrait it’s all the facial features that vary. Every aspect was meticulously measured and calculated to ensure an exact alignment of the size and background. The artist employed a complex printing technique called platinotype which is a monochrome photo printing technique based on the optical sensitivity of ferric oxide in “Arche” paper. The portraits were created between 1977 between 1977 and 1996. The first portrait was John Cage (1977) and the final portraits included Julian Schnabel and Alex Katz (1996). The portraits were displayed together at the end of 1996 Paris during La Maison Europeenne de la Photographie.

David Seidner was nineteen when his first cover image was published, and twenty-one at the time that his first of the many solo exhibitions featuring his photography was held in Paris. Over the next 20 years, Seidner produced work that was both “commercial” and “artistic” work. In the 1980s , he was working under agreement to Yves Saint Laurent. Commercial work for him included style shoots for French as well as Italian versions of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and The New York Times Magazine and advertisements that included Emmanuel Ungaro, Lanvin, Christian Dior, John Galliano and Bill Blass. The artistic side included exhibitions in the Pompidou Centre and La Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris as well as The Whitney Museum in New York and the release of numerous books. In 1986, he was asked by Musee des Arts de la Mode in Paris to capture costumes from their collection. His distinctive images of the time included painting fragments, photographic images fragments, glass shards and reflections. His inspiration was sound that was composed by John Cage.

Mr. Seidner also had over a dozen solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum and the Pompidou Center in Paris. In the last months of his life, he completed a series of photographs of orchids that were featured in The New York Times Magazine on April 25, 1999. He died of complications from AIDS on June 6, 1999.
