Allan Sekula Biography

Allan Sekula is one of the most popular and richest American photographer who was born on January 15, 1951 in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. Sekula was born 1951 in Erie (PA) of Polish and English ancestry. Sekula’s family moved to San Pedro in California in the 1960s. After completing his BA in biology at the University of California in San Diego in 1973, he graduated with an MFA in Fine Arts from the University of California in San Diego in 1974. In the 1970s Sekula began to make art. He staged performances, built installations and produced photo series. Sekula was a practitioner of “critical realism” that was informed by Marxist thought and documentary photography.

He was awarded fellowships and grants by the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts.

Sekula used photography to create books, films, and exhibitions. Sekula’s secondary medium was the written words. He used essays and other critical texts to critique contemporary capitalism at multiple levels. His writings are critical contributions to social reality and globalization and they focus on “the imaginary, material geographies and advanced capitalist world”. He was a film/video-maker and collaborated with Noel Burch, a film theorist, on projects such The Reagan Tapes (1984), which were about Ronald Reagan, and The Forgotten Space (2010).

Allan Sekula, born January 15, 1951, and died August 10, 2013, was an American writer, critic, filmmaker, theorist, and photographer. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts from 1985 to his death in 2013. His research often focused on large economic systems or “the imaginary geographies and the material geographies in advanced capitalist societies.”

His 1973 work Aereospace Folktales (1973) was the beginning of his mixing photographic series with long text, a form for whom he would be well-known. Fish Story (1995), which explores the world of maritime, forms the basis of much of The Forgotten Space.

Sekula died on August 10, 2013, aged 62, following a long struggle with gastric-esophageal cancer.
