David Band was born January 9th, 1957, at Boston, Massachusetts to a Jewish family. The father of David Band was Arnold Band, professor of Jewish and Hebrew literature at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while his mother was Ora Band, a Hebrew teacher.

Following the CGRO mission was completed the Dr. Band was transferred towards Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in which he concentrated in research classified to the scientific community and continued to research GRB energy and spectrum. When NASA was planning two new follow-up missions for CGRO which included that of the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission and Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (formerly named Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST)) observatories, David Band seized an opportunity to join the team at the Fermi Science Support Center at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Following the Ph.D. Dr. Band was a postdoctoral researcher in the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, the University of California at Berkeley and at the Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. He was involved in the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) which was an element of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) that was established in 1991.
