Flett began his career in local bands in Aberdeen like Cat Squirrel, Once Upon a Band and Pinto. Later, he relocated to London and was part of an all- Aberdeen group named Jock. While in London and was recommended by Manfred Mann and subsequently joined Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, with whom first made his appearance during their tour in the autumn of 1975 of America. He was a part of two Earth Band studio albums, The Roaring Silence and Watch which included two top singles “Blinded by the Light” and “Davy’s on the Road Again” respectively.

After Mann’s Earth Band in 1978, the band briefly played as a part-time member of Thin Lizzy after Gary Moore quit the band after an appearance on July 4, 1979. Following the time that Midge Ure was initially brought in to replace Moore, Flett was recruited in the beginning of September 1979 to be the lead guitarist with Scott Gorham for a tour of Japan and Japan, while Ure changed to keyboards. He performed his first concert together with Thin Lizzy in Osaka on 24 September 1979, Flett played at 5 shows prior to the group returned home. On this tour, he along with the band played a selection of songs which later appeared as songs on their Chinatown album in the following year, including “Didn’t I” and “Sweetheart”. In December, he appeared at several Thin Lizzy shows that were planned to make up for the absence of The Reading Festival earlier in the year. He quit the band just before Christmas. He had hoped to stay in Thin Lizzy, but instead Snowy White was selected as his replacement who recorded two albums together with the group. Flett said of his brief time as a member of Thin Lizzy in the following way “Great times with extremely talented, generous guys.”

Prompted by this experience, Flett wrote the song “Stolen Identity”, and was subsequently inspired to record an album. With the help of a number of musicians including Manfred Mann and John Lingwood, Flett’s first solo album, Flying Blind, was released in April 2014 for download.
