In the 2011-12 hockey season, Nurse was awarded a bronze medal by Team Ontario at the 2012 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and was selected as a member of the Tournament All-Star Team. In the same season, Nurse was one of the four minor players selected who played for Team Canada at the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships, winning the bronze medal.
Nurse was voted third in the overall rankings by Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2011 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. After two seasons playing with the Greyhounds Nurse was picked as the seventh pick by Edmonton Oilers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Before the season began the season, he was appointed captain of the team. He scored a record 50 points over the course of 64 games. Following the Greyhounds finished their season, Nurse joined the Oilers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate The Oklahoma City Barons. Nurse played in four regular season games , as well as three playoff contests.
Nurse made the Oilers’ opening night roster for the 2014–15 season, but did not partake in the team’s first three games. He made his NHL debut on October 14 in a 6–1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. After skating in two games for the team, the Oilers sent Nurse back to the Greyhounds on October 17.
