Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. (born May 11 1954) is a notorious American criminal and suspected serial murderer. Conahan was convicted of a single murder, however he has been connected to more than twelve murders, most of homosexuals located in Charlotte County, Florida area and later called The Hog Trail Murders.

Conahan’s credit card accounts were questioned and his home searched and found to have evidence linking Conahan to Burden along with Richard Montgomery. In July of 1996 Conahan was detained and taken in Lee County for the attempted murder of Burden. In February of the following year Conahan was indicted for killing Montgomery and his Burden attempts to murder charge was dismissed.

Another man’s skull was found in Charlotte County on April 17, 1996. Police searched the surrounding woods and found the rest of the man as well as a second body. The second was a man who had been raped, murdered and mutilated only the day before, and was identified as Richard Allen Montgomery. The first body was later identified as Kenneth Lee Smith. Speculation became rampant about a serial killer and the media dubbed the murders “The Hog Trail Killings”.

A third man’s mutilated body was discovered in North Port on March 7, 1996. He had been killed only 10 days earlier. He also remained unidentified until June 1999 when he was identified as John William Melaragno.

On February 1st, 1994, the disfigured body that belonged to a person was found within Punta Gorda. The body was in the open for a few months and was burned by rope on the skin. Additionally, the organs of the genitals were removed and then discarded. The body was not identified. The 1st of January, 1996 an animal belonging to the North Port family’s dog brought home a skull of a man. Police later uncovered a large portion of the skeleton and found that the genitalia were removed, much like the victim of 1994. This North Port skeleton was also not identified.

Conahan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and relocated with his family to Punta Gorda, Florida shortly after his birth. His parents were unhappy with the homosexuality he displayed in high school and referred Conahan to an psychiatric specialist. He graduated from Miami Norland High School in 1973, and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1977 in the station of Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. He was arrested in 1978. was almost being convicted of homosexuality and was dismissed just a few months later when an increase in homosexuality sparked an extensive dispute.

In May 1996, a few witnesses directed police to Daniel Conahan, including one who had escaped him when Conahan’s car became stuck while driving him down a dirt road. Later, police linked Conahan to a 1994 Fort Myers police report where Stanley Burden had been propositioned, tied to a tree, and nearly strangled. Burden survived and had rope scars on his body two years later.
