She is the daughter of family doctor Joseph Eltidge Thigpen (1920-2013) and who was a native of Bay Springs, Mississippi, and homemaker Beunis Fay Ratliff Thigpen born in Haskell. Their parents first were married in Tyler which is in which Beunis visited relatives. Her father was a notable flying record during World War II and earned various medals which included the Bronze Star. He also had his own aircraft as well as his house visits even after it was no longer considered to be common. His paternal grandpa was an ophthalmologist and was also known as Joseph Thigpen. The name is a reference to the paternal aunt the late Anita Thigpen Yelverton (1918-1999). She was the mother of three siblings: Joseph Emmitt Thigpen (1945-2013) An attorney from Austin who was a former county attorney as well as a District Attorney (previously), Peggy Hairgrove, and Emily Solis. As Rick she graduated from Haskell High School.
