Sonny Jack Cumbie (born August 8 in 1981) is an American football coach, and former quarterback. He is the current quarterbacks and offensive coordinator with TCU Horned Frogs. TCU Horned Frogs. Cumbie was a professional player with the Arena Football League, the Indoor Football League, and briefly in the National Football League (NFL). Cumbie was the quarterback of choice at Texas Tech during the 2004 season, when he led the nation in total offense and passing and won the 2004 Holiday Bowl, and MVP awards for the game.
Cumbie was selected to start during the 2004 season, over highly sought-after Junior college football player Robert Johnson and Redshirt Junior Cody Hodges. Cumbie played the Raiders to seven Regular season victories over SMU (27-13), TCU (70-35), Kansas (31-30), Nebraska (70-10), Kansas State (35-25), Baylor (42-17), and Oklahoma State (31-15). The Raiders were defeated with New Mexico 27-24 and lost close games against division adversaries Oklahoma (28-13) and losing in overtime at Texas A&M (32-25), as well as being beaten by Texas A&M (32-25), and the University of Texas (51-21). The Raiders finished their regular season with a 7-4 record, and 5-3 conference records, which that was tied for third place on the Big 12 South, and were invited to play the top 5 University of California team in the Holiday Bowl. Cumbie ended in the league as the nation’s leading team in passing yards and passing offense.
After completing his college career, Cumbie was not drafted in the 2005 draft but was signed as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts and later released. In 2006 Cumbie then joined the Los Angeles Avengers in the Arena Football League. He started 12 games his first season as a rookie, and won Rookie of the Year. Cumbie was invited back to the NFL by the Baltimore Ravens and signed a free agent contract in 2006 but was released. He returned as the Avengers starting quarterback in 2007. Playing in a total of 13 games in 2006, Cumbie completed 268-of-450 for 3,241 yards and 59 touchdowns in 2006. He also scored three touchdowns on the ground. In 2007 Cumbie led the Avengers to the playoffs while throwing for 83 touchdown passes and 4,370 yards. After the AFL folded in 2009, Cumbie joined the San Angelo Stampede of the Indoor Football League as the head coach and director or player personnel. Cumbie then became the starting quarterback for the team and led the team to the playoffs and a playoff win.
In 2009, Cumbie began his coaching career at Texas Tech as a graduate assistant under head coach Mike Leach where he was in charge of the defensive scout team and coaching the quarterbacks. In this role, he worked with quarterbacks Taylor Potts, Steven Sheffield, and Seth Doege. Cumbie served in this capacity for two seasons.
Cumbie led the the 23rd ranked Texas Tech to a win in the 2004 Holiday Bowl over Aaron Rodgers who was the leader of to the #4 California Golden Bears. Cumbie’s Raiders had a huge advantage as underdogs but Cumbie racked up 39-60 (65 percent) and recorded a career-high five touchdowns and 520 yards to help lead the Raiders to victory. The performance of Cumbie in that game was rewarded with M.V.P. honors. Cumbie completed his senior season with 4,742 yards of passing, finishing 65.6 percentage of passes, resulting in an average of 18 interceptions and 22 touchdowns and was the third consecutive team of Red Raider quarterback to be the top player in the country in passing.

Cumbie has walked onto Texas Tech, where he was an undergraduate. Cumbie was a member of the team’s scout squad during the 2000 season and received a scholarship to be part of the team prior to beginning the season of 2001. He was a third-string quarterback, behind Kliff Kingsbury, and BJ Symons throughout this season. Cumbie was first introduced to the team during the 2002 victory over New Mexico. He made his first pass in the game against Baylor University. After Kingsbury was graduated, Symons was named the first- team quarterback, and Cumbie was named the backup. Tech defeated many teams during the season, which allowed Cumbie plenty of mop time. He scored the first touchdown of his career in a backup to Baylor during a 62-0 win in 2003. Cumbie was a student at Snyder High School in Snyder, Texas, and was a three- sport letterman in football basketball as well as baseball. In football as a senior Cumbie was awarded first-team All-District awards and Honorable Mention All-South Plains honours in addition to being named as the District MVP. He was directed by David Baugh, the son of quarterback Sammy Baugh. As a basketball player, Baugh earned All-District and All-Big Country honors. In baseball Cumbie received the title of District MVP in his senior year. Cumbie was a graduate of Snyder High School in 2000. He was offered scholarships by Tarleton State University and West Texas A&M University. Cumbie rejected both of them and decided to enroll in Texas Tech University, about 80 miles away from Snyder and accepted an invitation to join the walk for the team of the head Coach Mike Leach.
Cumbie was a color commentator for the Texas Tech Football Radio network for 3 seasons (2005–2008), shortly before joining the Tech coaching staff. He currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas, and is married to his wife, Tamra. Cumbie graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor’s degree in History. Tamra, who is an alumna of Texas Tech, has a master’s degree in Technical Communication and a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy. They have two children.
