McKeon had a career as a pro for Irish provincial team Connacht during the Pro14 after passing through Connacht’s academy. He also played for his club side Athlone’s Athlone-based team Buccaneers.
In his first year in the senior ranks McKeon played just one game on the bench for the 2017-18 Pro14 match in which he played the Cheetahs. In the 2018-19 season , he played in his European debut when he came from the bench to face Bordeaux Begles in the Challenge Cup. In the game, however, McKeon suffered a serious shoulder injury to his shoulder. The timeframe in his recovery to competitive play. McKeon has played for Ireland internationally in under-age levels. His performance for Gonzaga brought him to his place in the Ireland school team to compete in the European Under-18 Championship in 2012 in which he played in the half of the team that came in runners-up at the tournament. In 2013 the team was the team for under-19s. McKeon was one in Mike Ruddock’s Ireland under-20 team in during the 2014 Six Nations Under 20s Championship. McKeon was a part of all five matches during the tournament, scoring a penalty for France. McKeon was also included in the squad for the Junior World Championship later that year. McKeon was omitted from the squad because of Ross Byrne but appeared from the bench for five games played by Ireland and scored eight points in the fourth place finish of the team.
After playing under-age rugby for his hometown of Leinster, McKeon joined the academy of the rival province Connacht in the year 2014. His cousin Eoin was already player in the Connacht senior team. While he was an integral part of Connacht’s academy Connacht training academy McKeon played for the Dublin- based Lansdowne throughout the year, when the team qualified for an All- Ireland League final. McKeon was not part of the team’s win against Clontarf however when he played his final Connacht debut on May 9th 2015, which was the day that the final was held. McKeon made his debut off the bench in the match against Zebre and scoring two conversions.
In April 2019, it was announced that McKeon would retire from rugby due to injury. His retirement came at the end of the 2018–19 season aged just 25.
