Hawkins was appointed to the team by Ian Snodin, but within several weeks Snodin was dismissed and was replaced with Steve Wignall. Wignall did not consider Hawkins the same way Snodin was, so at first Hawkins had to content with a few substitute appearances. Hawkins made it into the starting line-up in November 2000 , and was there until the end of 2000/01. Hawkins was well established as a player throughout the first half of the 2001/02 season , but was eventually forced out of the club after Doncaster was forced to trim the size of their team due to financial constraints.
