He also played for a number of seasons for their partners within the American Hockey League, the Providence Bruins and Bakersfield Condors. Prior to his professional debut in the year 2015, Cave played in the major junior league in his team the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League.
Cave was a part of his initial three seasons during his pro career playing for his team, the Providence Bruins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Bruins. In the final year under his contract for rookies for the Bruins in 2017-18, Cave received his first recall to the NHL on an emergency basis by the Bruins on the 21st of December 2017. Cave was able to make his NHL debut in the NHL, playing alongside his line-mate as well as ex- Broncos teammates from junior, Jake DeBrusk, in an 2-1 shootout win over Winnipeg Jets. Winnipeg Jets. In his third season as a member of the Broncos, Cave was named captain of the team. Cave continued to develop by increasing his offensive play to a near- point-per-game rate and scoring 70 points over 72 games. Following his final junior season finishing second in the club in points , scoring 75 points in seventy-two games Cave became an undrafted free agent under the entry level of a three-year contract with Boston Bruins on April 4, 2015. Cave is a native of North Battleford, Saskatchewan and lived within the city of Battleford, Saskatchewan. He began playing locally as a member of Battlefords Stars. Battlefords Stars in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League from 2009 to 2011. He was selected to the major junior league as the 13th pick at the time of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft in 2009 by the Kootenay Ice. The rights of Cave were transferred with Kootenay for Swift Current Broncos Swift Current Broncos on January 9, 2011.
Cave was diagnosed with acute obstructive hydrocephalus caused by an intra- cranial colloid cyst that occurred overnight on April 6 and 7 2020. He was undergoing an emergency operation the following day on the 7th of April. Cave was placed in a medically-induced state until his death in the early morning of April 11 at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
Following another call-up by the Boston team in the 2018–19 season, on December 17, 2018, Cave scored his first NHL career goal in a 4–0 shutout of the Montreal Canadiens. He remained with Boston to appear in 20 games, posting 1 goal and 5 points, before he was placed on waivers by the Bruins for reassignment to the American Hockey League (AHL). On January 15, 2019, Cave left the Bruins organization after he was claimed by the Edmonton Oilers, with whom he played 11 games in the 19–20 season.
