Born in Mufulira Katongo was a player with Butondo West Tigers and Kalulushi Modern Stars before shifting into Green Buffaloes in 2001. While playing for Buffaloes Katongo recorded four goals in CAF Confederation Cup games. In 2004, Katongo was transferred into South African side Jomo Cosmos prior to moving to Danish club Brondby IF in January 2007. After August, Katongo was again transferred, but this time it was with German team Arminia Bielefeld. In July 2010, he relocated back to Greece in order to join Skoda Xanthi.
