Yoshimitsu Mori died in Tokyo from acute liver failure on December 11, 2011. His final film, Bokukyu: An ressha de iko, a romantic comedy about two train enthusiasts, was released by Japan in March 2012.
He has been nominated eight times for the Japanese Academy Awards. In 2004, he won the Best Director award for Ashura no Gotoku (“Like Asura”), 2003. He was also awarded the best director award at the 21st Yokohama Film Festival, 39 keiho sanjukyu jo. (Keiho 2003), and the award of best screenplay at 18th Yokohama Film Festival Haru (1996). Sanjuro (2007) is the remake of Kurosawa’s film.
