He was a student at Middlebury College and Stanford University before making the move into Cornell University where he performed undergraduate research under the supervision under the direction of Peter T. Wolczanski. After having graduated from Cornell in 1989 with an A.B. Degree in 1989 Cummins attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to earn the Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1993 under the supervision under the direction of Richard R. Schrock. After obtaining the Ph.D., Cummins was accepted to stay with MIT in the position of assistant professor. He then elevated to full professor by the year 1996. Cummins was appointed Henry Dreyfus Professor of Chemistry in the year 2015.
The year 2013 saw Cummins received with the Ludwig Mond Award by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
As of 2008, Cummins received the honor of being a fellow at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Christopher Colin Cummins (born February 28th in 1966) is an American scientist and chemist who is currently Henry Dreyfus Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has contributed to the coordination the chemistry of transition metals Nitrides, phosphides and carbides.
In 2007 Cummins was presented with the 2007 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the field of Physical Sciences by Tel Aviv University as well as in 2007 the F. Albert Cotton Award by the American Chemical Society.
In 2017, Cummins was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In the same year, the American Chemical Society awarded Cummins the 2017 Linus Pauling Medal in recognition of his synthetic and mechanistic studies of early-transition metal complexes.
