Brooker was a teacher at several English schools, including King Edward VI Camp Hill School For Boys where he was headmaster from 1995 to 2002. Brooker was the headmaster of Bolton School Boys’ Division from 2003 to 2008 and an education advisor to King Edward Foundation from 2007 to 2011.

Brooker made his debut in first class for Cambridge University against Leicestershire, 1974. He scored 14 runs unbeaten in this match. With the ball, he took 12 wicketless overs at a cost of 19 runs.
