Saunders finished her medical school through her home at the University of London, taking her Bachelor of Science with distinction in the year 1986. The year she graduated, in 1987, Saunders was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Travelling Scholarship prior to becoming an Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1991. The first part of her career was spent in hospital facilities in London and south-east England and south east England, including Newham as well as Whipps Cross Hospitals. Since 1991, she has developed an area of research at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research. in 1998 Saunders was appointed a a senior lecturer and consultant surgeon in the University College London Hospitals.
