They had two children together. Cordon-Cardo was himself a colon cancer survivor, which was a result of a genetic predisposition. He wrote an article in 2006 about his experiences in an attempt to erase the stigma surrounding cancer in Spain. He won an award from Spanish Society of Oncology for the article. It highlighted the resources available to cancer patients.
Considered one of the pioneers in oncologic molecular pathology and the mechanisms of tumor suppression, Cordon-Cardo has authored or co-authored over 500 academic papers and numerous book chapters. He is on the Thomson ISI list of the top 250 researchers in Clinical Medicine and in 2013 was named to the list compiled by Stanford University and SciTech Strategies of the world’s 400 most influential bio-medical scientists.

Many of the findings from CordonCardo’s research at Sloan Kettering had implications for the treatment or experimental of cancer. They have also led to personalized treatments for cancers of genitourinary systems. Cordon- Cardo’s 1989 research showed that P-glycoprotein is not only present in cancer cells. Instead, it was believed that the protein is found in normal cells. Cancer cells can exploit this to survive chemotherapy. He was one of the first to demonstrate that the mutated gene (RB), which causes childhood cancer retinoblastoma, is also present in adults with sarcomas and no history. The poor clinical outcome was also associated with the adult cancers containing the mutated gene. In 1994, he collaborated with Arnold J. Levine to show how mutations in the gene that regulates the tumor suppressor protein p53 can cause cancer. This is because it inactivates all of the normal p53 and allows cancer cells to grow uncontrollably. Cordon-Cardo’s 1997 study found that tumors with mutated RB and p53 become very aggressive and resistant.
