Cho U (simplified Chinese: Zhang Xu ; traditional Chinese: Zhang Xu ; pinyin: Zhang Xu ; Wade-Giles: Chang Hsu ; born 20 January the 20th of January, 1980) is one of the Taiwanese professional player of Go. He is currently 6th in the number of titles that are won by the Japanese professional. His NEC Cup win in 2011 placed him ahead of his teachers Rin Kaiho and Norimoto Yoda. Cho is the only player to hold five of the most prestigious titles in the top seven with Iyama Yuta coming in second. Cho U, Naoki Hane, Keigo Yamashita and Shinji Takao form the group of players from Japan that are known as”the “Four Heavenly Kings”. His wife is among the top female professional players in Japan, Izumi Kobayashi, the great Kitani’s grandaughter and daughter of Kobayashi Koichi.
Cho will go on to win every major at least at least once including The Meijin in 2004 and The Gosei in 2006 and the Tengen in 2008 as well as in 2009, the Judan in 2009, and the Kisei in the year 2010. In 2004 Cho was the 3rd athlete in the history of football to earn more than 100 million Y in a single year, following Cho Chikun, and Koichi Kobayashi. After beating Yu Bin in the final of the 9th LG Cup, Cho U took home his first title in international competition and his first Japanese international victory following Cho Chikun’s Samsung Cup title in 2003. Cho was the leader of the list of top prize winners in 2010, winning Y=90,499,000 ($1,120,250.25 at the time of publication (28 Juin 2011). In May of 2011, Cho donated Y=15,000,000 from his Kisei prize to help those affected by the devastating 2011 Tohoku tsunami and earthquake.
Cho was part of the Japanese team for the fourth Nongshim Cup. On October 2, 2002 Cho became eligible for his debut Meijin league. After the end in the season 2002 Cho achieved a record by winning 70 wins over the course of a single season. Cho was given the Shusai Prize for his record-breaking year. After failing to challenge to win the title Honinbo preceding year Cho took his maiden title the 11th of July 2003 when he defeated Kato Masao, in six games to win the Honinbo’s 58th edition. Cho achieved three records in his victory: third youngest big title winner second-youngest Honinbo and the youngest Japanese 9 Dan. Cho had a meeting with Masao Kato, who that he beat for the Honinbo two times in 2003, when they squared against each other at the Agon Cup final as well as the Oza final of the challenger. Cho fell in to O Meien in the Agon Cup final but was awarded the right to take on O Meien to play in the Oza final. Cho was crowned champion in four games and made this the Oza the second time he has won a major win.

Cho ended his 55th Honinbo league with one win and five loss. In an interview following his final game, Cho said “It feels strange to become the challenger after losing my game. I was really happy when I won five games in a row, but losing successive games leaves me with regrets. I’m very fortunate to be able to appear on the important stage of a best-of-seven title match.” Cho was victorious in the first game and O Meien, the title holder, won the seventh and final match in the tournament. Cho earned Y=26.985,000 in prizes in the year 2001. On February 2, 2002 Cho was awarded one of the seven spots that Japan had not been seeded in the first World Oza. The first time he won the title was in the next month, when he was awarded the 50th NHK Cup. Cho beat the previous record of being the most youngest winners of the title. When he won the championship go journalist John Power commented, “Cho U is surely going to develop into one of the dominant players on the Japanese go scene. He is calm, has excellent concentration and reads very well — in fact, he seems to relish reading out difficult fights. Perhaps his greatest weapon may be his outstanding positional judgement: he is already reputed to be one of the fastest and most accurate players at summing up a position.”
Cho was able to be a part of the thirteenth Fujitsu Cup in 2000 through the qualifying tournament. In his first game, Cho defeated Dutch amateur 7 dan Rob van Zeijst. The second game, Cho defeated former number one Chinese representative Ma Xiaochun. Cho was defeated by Mok Jin-seok in the quarterfinals. Then, in May of 2000 Cho got a spot on the team for the 25th Kisei first edition with leagues. Cho was the most youthful player in the league , at just 20 years old. He ended the season with a the winning record that included three victories and three defeats. The following calendar, Cho qualified for the 56th Honinbo league. Cho was not able to qualify to play in the 26th Meijin league, when he lost in the final round to Hideki Komatsu at the final qualifying round. Cho completed with the second highest record , just behind Keigo Yamashita who won 53 times 12 losses, and one Jigo. Cho also received the Kido award for having the highest winning percentage (81.1 percent). Cho was promoted to 7 Dan on the 16th of April, 2001.
