The reign of Kang was finished by Shinji Takao who was at the time the sole remaining member from his Japanese team. Although it was a tough losing with white, considering that all Kang’s games prior were played with black, it nevertheless helped the Korean Team have an advantage with the remaining members as well as having the fellow Korean baduk King Lee Se-dol and Lee Chang-ho still in the team, Korea was still the most formidable contender for the trophy. The Chinese team featured the world’s number two Gu Li, and the former world champion Chang Hao, however the rivalry between Lee’s as well as Gu as well as Chang made the match appear to be more significant.
