Chirikure Chirikure is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on March 17, 1962 in Gutu, Masvingo, Zimbabwe. Chirikure Chirikure (born 1962 in Gutu, Zimbabwe) is a Zimbabwean poet and songwriter as well as a writer. Chirikure is a graduate of the University of Zimbabwe and an Honorary Fellow of the University of Iowa, US. He was employed by one Zimbabwe’s top publishing houses as an editor and publisher for 17 years until 2002. He is now the director of an agency for literary and is a performer, cultural consultant , and translator.
His second book, Hakurarwi – We Shall not sleep, was chosen among the 75 most important Zimbabwean Books of the 20th Century in a contest run by the Zimbabwe International Book Fair in 2004. In the competition, the same book was awarded the prize of being one of the top five Shona books from this century. Chirikure has been a part of numerous international and local festivals as well as symposiums over the decades. He is married and has three children.
He has written a few pieces in an Shona poetry anthology called Zviri Muchinokoro (2005, ZPH Publishers).

Chirikure’s entire poetry collection were awarded first prizes at his year- long Zimbabwe award for the best writer in Zimbabwe. The first of his books Rukuvhute also won Honorable Mention in the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 1990.
Chirikure has translated and written several stories for children and has published a few textbooks for education. He is also an occasional writer for the print media and hosted an online radio show for children Shona writers. Chirikure sings his poetry in as a solo artist or in his mbira ensemble. Chirikure made an album of music and poetry, Napukeni (2002), together with his co-workers, DeteMbira Group. He also wrote lyrics for many prominent Zimbabwean musicians, and occasionally performs with the musicians.
