Kean was born on 27 February 1987. When she was just two years old her feet were surgically removed because of meningococcal septicaemia. Her name is Bird due to the fact that her pal Kate Dunstan in high school found it hilarious that her name was pronounced similar to Bird. After she relocated in her home in the United States, her friends struggled to pronounce her initial name correctly – which sounds like “tidy” – when she was in the US. So, the name stuck. Her home town was Parkdale, Victoria. A Kean’s Day award that recognizes her the qualities of courage and compassion Each year, the award is given to a student of Kilbreda College, where she was educated. In 2012, she is living within Alexandra Headland, Queensland.

In October 2011, she was named as part of the senior national squad that would compete at the Paralympic qualifying tournament for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She was the captain of the Gliders at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. In the gold medal game against Germany, she played 13:02 minutes. Her team lost 44–58, but earned a silver medal. She scored 1 point and had four rebounds in the game.

Kean spent a gap year while in England at the time of her gap year in England. She graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2010and her final year, she earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Queensland. As of 2015, she began studying for her PhD in health Promotion in the University of the Sunshine Coast. She was named the program’s manager in the Sports Elite and Education Dual (SEED) program that enabled elite athletes with disabilities to pursue studies alongside high-performance training and competition in the year 2016.
