The year 1999 was the time Whalen was a part of helping to help the US Women’s National Team win the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Whalen was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame on Long Island in the Soccer Category with the Class of 2001.
In 2001, Whalen was a founding player of the Women’s United Soccer Association, playing alongside US teammates Christie Pearce and Tiffeny Milbrett for the New York Power. This was the world’s first women’s soccer league in which all of the players were paid as professionals. Whalen scored two goals during the NCAA Final Four semifinal match against Notre Dame, as Connecticut beat the Irish 2-1 in one of the most dramatic surprises in NCAA female soccer’s history, beating the previously undefeated Irish. Whalen was named the in 1995 as well as 1996 Big East Defensive Player of the Year. She then played in the striker position during her senior season, where she scored 22 assists and 21 goals to make her the team’s top scorer. In her final year at UConn Whalen won the Hermann as well as M.A.C. Trophy finalist. She also took home her the Honda Sports Award as the best soccer player in the nation. She concluded the year with 43 assists. The team retired her number. 8 jersey.
