The year 1999 was the time Whalen was a part of helping to help the US Women’s National Team win the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team is famously referred to as”the “99er’s” each player helped change the way women play sports for the better. It was the World Cup was hosted in the United States in various stadiums including the Rose Bowl, Soldier Field as well as Sanford Stadium. In the final match against China the teams had not scored, and the game was moved into extra time before converting into penalty kicks. Whalen was on the field for every minute of extra-time during the final game against China. While she didn’t take penalty kicks, Whalen was the first woman to sprint toward Brandi Chastain after securing the win in The United States. Both of them were featured on the front cover of Time Magazine and today it remains among the top memorable images from the history of sports.

Whalen was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame on Long Island in the Soccer Category with the Class of 2001.

In 2001, Whalen was a founding player of the Women’s United Soccer Association, playing alongside US teammates Christie Pearce and Tiffeny Milbrett for the New York Power. This was the world’s first women’s soccer league in which all of the players were paid as professionals. The University of Connecticut she was an offensive and defensive player for the female soccer squad. While playing for Connecticut Whalen, she was Three- time All-American and was named the 1997 NSCAA Division 1 National Player of the Year and was selected as a member of the Soccer America’s Collegiate Team of the Decade in the 1990s. Whalen scored two goals during the NCAA Final Four semifinal match against Notre Dame, as Connecticut beat the Irish 2-1 in one of the most dramatic surprises in NCAA female soccer’s history, beating the previously undefeated Irish. Whalen was named the in 1995 as well as 1996 Big East Defensive Player of the Year. She then played in the striker position during her senior season, where she scored 22 assists and 21 goals to make her the team’s top scorer. In her final year at UConn Whalen won the Hermann as well as M.A.C. Trophy finalist. She also took home her the Honda Sports Award as the best soccer player in the nation. She concluded the year with 43 assists. The team retired her number. 8 jersey.
