Smith was a four-year student of his college experience in Bethel University. In the four years he was in Bethel, Smith made 77 appearances, and scored 39 assists and 59 goals and was selected to the All-American Team in 2011.

Smith joined USL Pro club Pittsburgh Riverhounds. On 18 May 2012, Smith made his debut for the Riverhounds and scored his first professional goal in a 1–1 draw against the Richmond Kickers. Smith was named to the USL Pro team of the week that same week.

On 17 January 2012, Smith was drafted third overall in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by the New England Revolution.

Smith who was in the final semester of finishing his master’s degree, was selected by the New England Revolution with the 3rd overall selection in the draft supplemental to become the first player in Bethel’s history to have been selected from the MLS club. While still in school, Smith finished his master’s and was accepted to Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2011. Pittsburgh Riverhounds 2011 where he was a part of two seasons.
