Pickard was a regular player for the majority of the season 2010-11 with his team the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL as well as the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. In 2011, during the Stanley Cup playoffs he was invited for the Nashville Predators before their 2nd round match against their rivals the Vancouver Canucks; however, Pickard was not able to play in an actual game.

Pickard returned to North America in the off-season and agreed to a try-out at the San Antonio Rampage training camp for the 2013–14 season. He was later released by the Rampage before on November 8, 2013, he was signed to an AHL deal with the Oklahoma City Barons and then loaned to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

On June 10, 2014, Pickard returned for another stint in Europe, signing a one- year contract to be the starting goaltender with Danish club, the Odense Bulldogs of the Metal Ligaen. At the starting goaltender with the Bulldogs, Pickard enjoyed a successful season in appearing in 36 games.

In his fourth junior season Pickard was picked for selection by Team Canada for the 2009 World Junior Championships. Pickard played in two games as a backup for Dustin Tokarski of the Spokane Chiefs in helping Canada to win their fifth consecutive gold medal.

The offseason was when he was selected in the off-season by the Nashville Predators in the first round, 18th overall during the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The 2008/09 season, in which he posted the following statistics: 2.28 GAA and .921 save percentage, while also helping guide players from the Americans towards their 2nd consecutive U.S. Division title. He was nominated to win his third Del Wilson Trophy opposite Braden Holtby from the Saskatoon Blades and named to the WHL West First All-Star Team.

Pickard was a minor player for The Winnipeg Monarchs before joining the major junior ranks of the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2005-06. He was a backup for Carey Price in his first two seasons. He assumed the position of the starter in 2007-08 when Price was promoted into the Montreal Canadiens. Pickard had 46 wins, received the honor of CHL Goaltender of Week the 9th of December 2008. He scored an impressive 2.32 goal-against average (GAA) as well as a .920 save percentage to becoming the successor to Price in the role of CHL Goaltender of the Year. Pickard was also awarded with the Del Wilson Trophy for being the best WHL goalie and was selected on the WHL West and CHL First All-Star Teams.

In the 2012–13 season, Pickard signed his first contract abroad in agreeing to a one-year deal with Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan side, Djurgårdens IF. In 45 games, Pickard earned a professional high 25 wins to help Djurgårdens advance to the Kvalserien playoffs.
