Lord Allen was the chief executive for Granada Group from 1996 to 2000 and the executive chairman for Granada Media plc from 2000 until the year 2004, the chief executive officer for ITV plc from its formation in 2004 to 2007 as well as chairman of music group EMI. The chairman was of Endemol and the non- executive director for Tesco plc and Virgin Media. In March 2012 the company was named by Ed Miliband, the leader of the Labour Party, to the post of chairman on the board that oversees the political party’s executive. He is the chairman for the British Red Cross.
In 2005, he was awarded in 2005 the Freedom of the City of Liverpool.
In 2006, Allen stepped down after fifteen years with the company.
On 1 August 2013, it was announced that Allen was to become a Labour peer in a list of new appointments to the House of Lords. He was created a Life Peer on 2 October 2013 taking the title Baron Allen of Kensington, of Kensington in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Allen began his career at Granada plc in 1991, initially as Chief Executive Officer at Granada Television, before becoming Group Chief Executive in the year 1996. During his tenure at Granada Allen, he played a key role in the acquisition by Forte Group for PS3.9 billion in 1996. He also led the acquisitions from LWT and Yorkshire-Tyne Tees TV between 1994 and 1999, respectively. In 2001, Granada Group merged with Compass to create Granada Compass, then demerged into Granada Media plc and Compass Group. Allen remained with Granada after the two companies split and he was appointed executive chairman of Granada plc in 2001. When Granada joined forces together with Carlton Communications in 2004 to create ITV plc, Allen became the company’s Chief Executive.
Allen was the chairperson of Allen was the chairperson of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Allen was a part of the London 2012 Olympic bid team as well as a Director for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. He was also the Mayor of the Olympic Village.
From 2006 to 2008, Allen was previously Chief Advisor to the British Home Office. He has also been a senior advisor to Goldman Sachs Private Equity, non-executive director of Endemol and Virgin Media and executive Chairman of EMI.
