Chan was co-founder and co-leader of “the Sea Turtle Research Unit” known as SEATRU within Universiti Malaysia Terengganu between 1985 until 2009, before resigning from the position of Professor.
Chan is recognized for establishing his first Malaysian in-situ protection of eggs for marine turtles within the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary in Redang Island. Since its start at the beginning of 1993, the program has evolved into a permanent nesting and tagging study program, which includes a efficient volunteer program.
